. . So, yesterday I finished the reincarnated!Merlin at Hogwarts story.
Then, when I got up this morning, I realized that his second year would involve Umbridge. And I kinda wanna write it.
Someone tell me not to. Because it would be the muggleborn boy who accidently released the dragons and the Toad in the same room at the same time – which would be bad for everyone. *shudders*
I’m pretty sure Umbridge wouldn’t survive.

I really enjoy a good comedy. And if I want to watch some of the best, it HAS to be a British one. They made lots and lots of great comedies back in the 60's. Most of them have me bending over with laughter. Just like this one: "The Fast Lady", made in 1962. Not only does it have one of THE best British actors EVER, Leslie Phillips, in one of the leading roles, but the story is hilarious! Simple, but fun. In short: Scotsman Murdoch Troon (Stanley Baxter), a real stingy guy, who rides around on his bike, is run down the side of the road and traces the driver to get him to pay for it. The driver turns out to be Charles Chingford, a wealthy tycoon, played by the marvellous James Robertson Justice (known from the teriffic "doctor" movies from the 50's). Of course, the two of them get off on the wrong foot from the start. Add to that, Chingford's beautiful daughter, Clare, played by Julie Christie, who Murdoch falls in love with. From there on, things go crazy, as Clare tells him she likes sports cars and the men who drive them, and Murdoch decides to learn how to drive. Leslie Phillips, who plays Freddy Fox, a used car sales man and sleaze/womanizer, sort of talks Murdoch into buying this old car- The Fast Lady. Add to all this funny stuff going on, Murdoch's and Freddy's landlady, Mrs Staggers, acts like a mother to Murdoch. Not to mention the poor, poor driver's instructor with his nerves shot to heck!!!! Fun times ahead throughout the movie!!!! - Location:My room

I'm considering taking part in http://campnanowrimo.org/ in August this year. The main nano is in November, but with that being right in the middle of the time when I'll be running and writing for tw_classic_bb I know I'm not going to have the time. I'm really not sure I'll be able to manage the 50k in a month though, especially as I'm going to lose a couple of days in the middle of the month due to a family wedding. But I suppose the best I can do is try to reach it. The question is what to write? Do I go for fanfic? probably a Torchwood one (maybe the one I mistakenly asked for on twstoryfinders before I realised a few weeks later it was something from my own old fic idea folder) or do I dust of the two original ideas I've had lying around for ages and get writing one of them? Original fic idea one: Contemporary fantasy, set in Yorkshire. The world knows about supernatural creatures, and they are tolerated for the most part, although suspicion and discrimation are still pretty common. Modern day supernatural adventure with a secondary m/m romance subplot. Nathan is a psychic who's gift is to be able to see into the past of an object. He works for a small company of psychic who generally deal with finding lost/stolen property or locating people who've had money left to them in a will. It's not a particularly well paid job, and he knows that he could make more money if he would take on missing persons cases, but a previous bad experience - the person he'd been looking for had died. However, when John, a werewolf, approaches the company Nathan works for about a missing relative, Nathan agrees to work the case. Mostly it's because he needs the money - his house needs repairs and his car has just failed its MOT. But partly it's because John is a nice guy, and nobody else wants to take the case because the missing person, a student at the university is also a werewolf. Things are not as they seem though, and Nathan soon finds that there have been a number of other disappearances, all of them werewolves. As he and John investigate futher they discover a plot by an extremist group who are trying to turn people against seeing werewolves etc as being real people. With time running out for both the kidnapped werewolves and themselves in danger, Nathan and John have to convince the police there is a case to look at. Original fic idea number two: Okay the setting is very low magic fantasy (I'm thinking there's perhaps a very few people with a scrying type ability and that's it) world with a tech level roughly comparable to Regency UK, except the fact that they are on the even of not just the industrial revolution but a steampunk type one as well. In terms of relationships it's very different from 19th century UK. Basically same sex relationships are allowed, and in the military it's assumed that it will happen. There tends to be the underlying assumption that it's just about sex, and that they will get married to somebody of the opposite sex at a later date and have a family though. Not doing so is thought of as being a bit eccentric, but certainly not prohibited. This is for Avron and to some extent Sitherand, there are a number of other counties that have either more or less tolerant attitudes, but with the exception of a few characters those other countries don't really come in to play in the story. The plot is a bit sketchy, but basically there are a couple of countries, Arvon and Sitherand, the Queen's of the two countries are sisters. Sitherand is going through a bit of political upheaval, and some military units from Arvon have been despatched to help keep the peace. Lieutenent Jago Sarpedon is in one of those detachments, and is in charge of a supply convoy, taking guns from the manufacturers to one of the garrisons. He's most of the way back to a garrison with a convoy when it's attacked and the guns stolen. He and the remaining soldiers in the convoy head back to the garrison. The garrison fort has been attacked, the people killed or fled. Jago finds evidence that the attack on the fort was carried out by a mercenary unit, although who is employing them to furter destabilise Sitherand he can't tell. He needs to get the information back to his commander or at least the next nearest fort. Not 100% sure on exactly where the plot is going, although I've had a scene of a botched attempt at blowing up a bridge in the middle of the night in my mind for this for a long time. The attack on the fort etc is actually part of a coup in the government who are trying to gain power from the royalty but want to be able to deny envolvement, and be able to blame it on rouge elements in the country or outside of it should it not have the desired effect. The result however to drag the country to the brink of civil war. I've got a lot more waffle about background world building, and backstory for Jago, as this over all idea had been kicking around since something like 1995 or 6 in one form or another - sometimes with no magic, sometimes with a more medieval type fantasy setting, sometimes without the proto-steampunk elements. Is 'low magic pseudo-historical military adventure fantasy with proto-steampunk elements' even a genre? Would it fit into a text box if it was? I've looked at the ones on campnanowrimo and suppose it would probably be best to put it in the fantasy genre as it's closest. So what do people think? Should I have a go? and if so what do you think I should write? What do you think of the original fic idea? Worth writing or not?

Ok, just clearing my head.
Workouts - Sunday: Kendo at honbu dojo. I got a lesson from Ike and Sato Senseis, both nanadan. Ike sensei is a 5' nothing, 72 year old ball of fire. He works in his garden for three hours before practice, gives lessons, gives bouts to ten+ people and barely breaks a sweat. I was his fifth opponent and was staggering away after five minutes. He gave me some great tips on my foot stomp and how to relax. Worked on kumitachi. We just learned something similar to this....
Monday: sat on my ass and played Mass Effect multiplayer. (and flew) I also roasted a lamb with mixed vegetables as well as grilled burgers. Tuesday: AbRipperX. Iaido one hour. Taught the intermediate class, going through the Shoden set. Focused on Tsuigekito, Zantotsuto, Sanpogiri. I'm working more wrist into my cuts, which increases the power and speed of the cut. Kendo hour and a half. Fought sensei to a 1-1 draw. I scored Ippon in the first minute and then went another five minutes before he scored with suriage men. In this free sparring we allow a fair amount of grappling and it turned into sort of an Aikido randori. I avoided one disarm, using Iriminage. In the final seconds, sensei threw me with Kotegaeshi and on instinct, I turned into the throw, rolled into it, slapped the ground with my left hand and came right back up blocking. Wednesday: 3 mile run @ 18:32. P90X2 Total Body - lots of ab ball work. 4 position pullups. Preacher curls. Tris. Lunges. AbRipperX.
Flew Mon, Tues, Weds. Night currency. Flew with the squid and the jarhead. :P The sunset was beyond gorgeous, light blues and whites fading to violet, red and orange before shifting to deep blue with stars. It was like a Maxfield Parrish painting. I think we're going to take a look at Venus when it crosses the Sun soon. We'll need those filters to see it. I am told by Commander Lasagna that, if we miss it, it will be something like 113 years before that happens again. Incredible celestial event that I hope to see way up in the sky. I took the ILS approach down to decision altitude, just a hair right of centerline, on glideslope. Adjusted for wind and then, main gear on the centerline of the runway at the fat boy markers, nothing but butter.
Got a call from my old buddy, Rogue! (not because he's some sort of maverick, but he's in dire need of Rogaine)
I had some great ME multiplayer moments with Mike. I also have a good team going with Supra John, Shelby, Bwills, and BattleKhat. I don't think I've ever lost a game with these guys and I love the cooperative nature of the game with them. Wills got wiped out once and he was crumpled on the ground, on his knees with his ass in the air. I laughed so hard it took me a few more seconds to revive him. I haven't been able to unlock the Vorcha, the Quarian or les deserteurs de cerberus yet, but the new maps were beautiful. I've yet to figure them out and I spent my time running mostly on FB Jade and Goddess.

I found a great blog to follow on Tumblr. It's called "did you know" except spelled "did-yuo-kno." It's full of such "facts" as "Diabeetus is contagious, so never touch a person who has it," "Oprah Winfrey invented pancakes, which is why her picture is on the syrup bottle," "Your cat scratches your furniture because he hates you and wants to tell you you're a terrible cat owner," "American is the most popular language in the world," and "When a male raccoon wants to have sex with a female raccoon, he will 'like' and comment on all her Facebook statuses." Oh, and also that Canada has no Internet access. :-) They all have pictures to accompany them. What's just as funny as all the "facts" are the comments posted on them. People will say things like, "OMG, you are so stupid! You belong in kindergarten!" on the raccoon story, and "My grandpa has diabetes and I hug and kiss him all the time! People DIE from diabetes every day, so how can you be so mean as to say things like this about diabetes!" and "American isn't a language, you stupid idiot!" and "Do you actually believe these things you're posting?" Once in a while someone will make a comment like, "Hey, wait a minute! These aren't real facts!" Behold my favourite of the "Did yuo kno" facts.

Was late to work because I was up late and just couldn't get back to sleep, then couldn't wake up this morning.
But then work went OK after that. Had the teen group and all went well.
Came home and met the kids at Dress barn and got a dress for The Kid. Then came home and had [Unknown LJ tag] come over. Gave her her birthday present, and ended up all going to Taco Bell together.
Came home and had a long discussion/argument with The Kid about Sybil and other stuff. We settled that and now it's time for bed. Can't be late again!
Gratitude List:
1. Friends.
2. The Kid.
3. Nice time out.
4. Better weather.
5. AC.
6. Cats. - Mood:listless

"The Yellow Wood" (QAF/Shelter)
Words today: 2256. Words total: 7282. Not all of it prose - a lot of notes and naked dialogue in there. Reason for stopping: Bedtime. Darling du Jour: "Yeah, you're saying that now, but wait until you two have spent your entire term stuck in a nine-by-nine studio with Mira and some geriatric still-life painter who looks like Alfred Hitchcock and smells like mothballs."
Accomplishment: Got chapters divided (seven) and a semi-solid outline in place. Prelude's got real words, as does about 3/5ths of Chapter 1.
Mean Things: Imposter syndrome, making fun of grant committees.
Research Roundup: CalArts residence halls, Geography: Los Angeles County in general, San Pedro, Pacific Bluffs, CalArts. Art installations. Apartment prices and sizes in Valencia.
Writing Music: A new writing playlist for this fic! The Shelter soundtrack and some selected tunes from the QAF soundtracks. Specifically notable tonight: "Lie to Me," by Shane Mack, and "Synasthesia" by Junkie XI.

the hip and the dead by holli (The Avengers, Steve Rogers, gen) I entirely blame this fic for my current interest in Steve Rogers: accidental hipster. Also it is simultaneously hilarious and full of punching me in the feelings, so. You know. It's good. Go read it. I need to start posting in my journal again sometimes, I think. Dang. life's been messy, so much it hurts like you have no idea. I'm one second away from crying, and one second away of puching someone in the face. it's a year already since I heardof HIM being sick, one year ago I was hopeful, he'll be okay in no time, but seems like nothing I ever want turns the way i want it to go. I miss my darling friend like nobody knows. Wish we could be together again, wish we could travel, wish life were easier... I just wish I cuold sleep for the days to come until new year's eve

Notes for panels I was actually on will be sparse because I was more focused on discussing stuff with my fellow panelists and the audience than on writing things down, but I did get a few things jotted down. As with all my notes, these are my own fallible impressions of what I heard/experienced, so please correct me if you were there and I got something wrong. I will list names of panelists who spoke because they are listed publicly in the program, but will refrain from naming audience members whether known or unknown to me unless they specifically comment telling me to name them. Lesley Hall said an anti-hero might think "I just want to survive this, and if I can do that with some money in my pocket as well..." Chris Hill mentioned Holly Black's Curse Workers trilogy. Victoria Janssen talked about female anti-heroes going against gender expectations. Ripley from Aliens and Kara Thrace from BSG were initially written for men and so it allowed for them to be fuller characters. An audience member asked about the differences between a reluctant hero, an anti-hero, and a likeable villain. Another audience member brought up the anti-hero vs. protagonist issue. Do we have anti-heroes to play against a boring hero? Lesley said she'd like to see the wise-cracking best friend as a protagonist. Chris said something about characters without a lot of agency but still a lot of personality such as many female characters in 30's noir. An audience member asked if an anti-hero is just a hero caught on a bad day, and also about two opposing definitions of anti-hero that we panelists were discussing. Another audience member questioned if an anti-hero isn't just a hero who has had too much traumatic stuff happen to them to be upstanding hero types anymore. I was recced Legend of Korra. ************** As for my own notes on the panel and what I may or may not have brought up: I like the idea of anti-heroes as being more morally fluid characters. My main examples were Kara Thrace as the always heroic but in non-traditional ways chaotic good anti-hero, Sarah Conner as the morally grey anti-hero who is fighting for her cause but in ways that mimic those she is fighting against, and Faith from Buffy and Angel who of course is sometimes the villain and sometimes the anti-hero, but is never really committed to either one side morally speaking. I also brought in the tvtropes.org sliding scale of anti-heroes and anti-villains because that's, apparently, what I do. Sigrid Ellis at her blog Talking Too Much did a write-up as audience member which I liked, as well - check it out here.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am having one of THOSE days. It's started to creep in at work and now I'm feeling it on the internet again, which I know is stupid but there it is. So, I'll say it again - if I'm ever pissing you off then you need to let me know. Because I cannot judge. And my default position is to think that I'm pissing everyone off and to feel weird about sending emails and everything and, just, like, it's not a nice place to be. Note: nobody has done ANYTHING to cause this. My neuro-atypicality is showing :b Crossposted ( with comments) at my dreamwidth | comment at the original entry
