Oooh, this is what is wrong with learning (negative) personal details of people whose work you admire...

(Tangent: like Orson Scott Card.)

Did you watch the video? I'm not thinking things were so bad on Gibson's side.

why the huge need to have 4 cops take him to the ground? he wasn't being belligerent or rude.
oh. i get it... it's because he's tall. that must have been it.
or, the cops are dicks.

yes, i am jaded.

What I don't get is that he was supposedly stopped before. Why wasn't his "intoxicated state" noted then?
11th-Jan-2013 04:40 am (UTC)
yeah, that too!

That's....rather poor police work then.

If Gibson's "intoxicated state" was so low as to be unnoticed - or ignored - by the first cop, it seems to me then that (assuming he was even intoxicated to begin with) his level would be nowhere near high enough to warrant the reaction the cops gave when handcuffing him. Gibson would have been in full control of his mental capacities, and he seemingly wasn't acting in a threatening or belligerent way.

I really wonder what truly happened. "Flaunting authority" just feels like a jarring out-of-characterness, even within this whole drama.

Oh yeah, I know. I teach Driver's Ed. One of my students told about the time his dad was pulled over for littering (throwing a cigarette out the window). Dad got so belligerent that the cop tacked on attempted arson, which he could do since it was summer and the fire danger was "extreme".

That's just charges though, which is perfectly and legally allowable. What's not allowable is dog piling a guy who at that moment isn't causing you any physical (and hence, imminent physical danger to the cops) problems.

I' think you're right, it's hard to see in the video exactly what state Gibson was in, but he looks/sounds coherent enough to assume he wasn't drunk up to his eyeballs, so it's more probable that the police were mad at him for disobeying their orders.

Oh dear. :\
11th-Jan-2013 07:03 am (UTC)
Hm.

I wonder if CBS's policy on DUIs is still strict. 'Cause this may be the end of Hotch. :/

Well, Shemar was arrested for suspicion of DUI in 2009, so I doubt anything will happen to Thomas. Assuming he's guilty, that is.

I hope he's exonerated, but given the first report I read claimed he sideswiped barricades on a run route, I'm not optimistic. And if this weren't an actor folks admire so much, would people be tripping over themselves to offer excuses and conspiracy theories? Otherwise good, kind people sometimes do incredibly stupid things, and if he was drunk behind the wheel, then he deserves the consequences.

Thank you. I'm going to reserve judgement until more details come out, but "Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving" applies to everyone. Even beloved TV stars.

This pretty much sums up my feelings as well. If he's guilty fan or not I will lose tons of respect for him. Just because he's a 'good guy' doesn't mean he is incapable of making mistakes and this one is a doozy if it's true.

But...I really hope it's not.
12th-Jan-2013 07:43 am (UTC)
I won't lose respect. Personally, I think it's unfair DUI gets all the attention when there are equally - if not more - other dangerous ways to drive. Speeding (like the cast of Lost), texting, tired (9/10 drivers pulled over suspected of DUI are just tired), eating, etc.

I am sorry but driving while over the legal limit is a stupid, stupid thing to do.

Anytime you make a decision that can put innocent people's lives at risk you're being irresponsible and stupid. I don't care what kind of justifications are put in place or whether or not the offense is 'socially acceptable' or not. I don't care if it's texting or driving drunk or shaving or whatever. If you're eyes aren't on the road or you're putting other people's lives at risk I am going to call you out for being an idiot.

You are entitled to your opinion of course. However, there's nothing anyone is going to say that will convince me that irresponsibility to such a high degree should not be met with disappointment.

And of course this has nothing to do with Thomas at this point since I consider him innocent until I hear otherwise.

Ah. Congrats on being the only 100% perfect driver out there in the world.

I am sorry, please show me where I said I was?

I have done tons of idiotic things in my lifetime including being a stupid driver at times. I am quite fine to admit I have made idiotic decisions as a driver but I'd rather try and learn from those mistakes than pacify myself with "It's OK I did x, y, and z. Everyone else does it too." That argument is weak and reminds me of something a naughty 5 year old would come up with to justify stealing another child's toy etc.

Oh wow. Accuse me of putting words in your mouth, then go and do the same to me. Then basically call me childish. I see the adult portion of this discussion is over, so I'll just leave you to it.

I am glad we're finally in agreement. Have a good weekend.

That's Not Good. :(
11th-Jan-2013 02:14 pm (UTC)
I'm reserving judgment, but it's sad that it really doesn't look good. I do think there was overkill by having all those officers take him down. Only time will tell. :(
